Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o, serving as Kenya's Controller of Budget, epitomizes a beacon of integrity and accountability in public service. With her extensive background in finance, accounting, and strategic management, Dr. Nyakang’o brings a wealth of expertise to her role.

Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o - Controller of Budget
Dr. Margaret Nyakang’o was appointed as Kenya's Controller of Budget on December 4, 2019. In this role, she oversees and reports on the implementation of the budgets for both National and County Governments, providing quarterly updates to key government bodies such as the National Assembly, Senate, County Assemblies, and the Executive. Her primary mandate is to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, authorizing withdrawals only when they align with legal and budgetary provisions.

The Office of the Controller of Budget (OCoB) is an independent office established under Article 228 of the Constitution of Kenya. Its core mandate is to oversee the implementation of National and County Government budgets by authorizing withdrawals from public funds. The OCoB also prepares and publicizes statutory reports, conducts investigations, resolves disputes, and advises Parliament on fund transfers to State organs and public entities. Dr. Nyakang’o’s leadership at the OCoB exemplifies her dedication to transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility in Kenya’s public finance management.

Dr. Nyakang’o holds a Doctorate in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool, where her research focused on Strategic Workforce Planning in the Kenyan Public Service. She also earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Nairobi. As a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya, Dr. Nyakang’o brings a wealth of expertise to her role.

With over thirty years of experience in Finance, Accounting, Strategic Management, Auditing, Tax, and Human Resource Management, Dr. Nyakang’o is recognized for her integrity and professional excellence. She is an active member of the Association of Women Accountants of Kenya and the Women on Boards Network, advocating for corporate governance and ethical practices in all her endeavors.
